Tsunamis, or tidal waves, are a series of waves created by the displacing of a large amount of water usually occurring within oceans or even sometimes large lakes. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and other underwater explosions (including detonations of underwater nuclear devices), landslides and other mass movements, meteorite ocean impacts or similar impact events, and other disturbances above or below water all have the potential to generate a tsunami. On March 11, 2011 a mass movement of plate tectonics. A 9.0 earthquake hit Japan devastating the country, destroying cities and homes, washing away cars, and killing over 7000 people.
